Are You A Good Person?

Updated: Jan 14

This is a very interesting question. Its a question that we don't really ask ourselves. But when asked, most people tend to believe that they are good people. There are some that will answer " No, I'm not a good person." But the majority of people believe that they are good people. Their answers are relative to how they view themselves through their worldly lens. In fact when asked, almost all people think that they are good people even if they did some bad things. That's because we compare ourselves to other people constantly and formulate our opinion from those observations. We move our target around to make ourselves look better. For example when I was doing ungodly things I would look at other people doing worse things and I would remember thinking to myself " Man, I'm pretty good compared to them!" I was the epitome of self-righteous. My point is, I thought I was still a good person as long as I wasn't doing what they were doing. I believe most people think the same way. They feel that they are good because they try to do more good than bad. But God is so holy, righteous and just, He despises any wrong doing. Jesus, didn't even consider himself to be good. The bible says in the book of Mark...

Mark 10:17-27(NKJV )Now as He was going out on the road, one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”

18 So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery,’ ‘Do not murder,’ ‘Do not steal,’ ‘Do not bear false witness,’ ‘Do not defraud,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother.”

So even Jesus wouldn't call himself good. In that passage Jesus did give us the very thing we need to use, to examine ourselves, according to God standards. So my question to you is have you ever lied? If yes, then your a Liar! If you stolen something even if it was small? If you have, that makes you a lying thief! Did you ever hate someone? If you did, Jesus says that you committed murder in your heart. Have you ever used Gods name as a cuss word? That's blasphemy and punishable by death in the old testament. Now, Do you still think your a good person? Isaiah the prophet wrote, Isaiah 64:6 New King James Version

6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousness's are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away. When we die we will face a holy and just God, if he judges us by his commandments and he will, will you be innocent or guilty? Heaven or Hell? I hope these questions concern you because they should. It's going to decide if you will walk with God right now, and for eternity . But don't fret because God did something so amazing if you can understand it, it can change everything for you. What God did to save guilty sinners like us was to have Jesus nailed to the cross as a blood sacrifice for the sin of mankind. Its like going to court with a huge pile of tickets and having the judge say "Someone has paid your fines and your free to go." That's what happened on the cross...Jesus paid the atonement for all of our debts! All we have to do is confess with an open and contrite heart that were sorry for what we have done. It's got to be genuine. The bible says Godly sorry brings repentance. 2Corinthians7:10(New King James Version) 10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.  God knows your heart! Then you have to repent, that is to do a 180 from our sin and put your trust in Jesus. If you do that, God will wash you clean and give you a new heart . Not because your good. Because He is good and rich in mercy.

2 Peter 3:9 New King James Version 9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Truly asking for forgiveness will restore your relationship with God and he will see you for the new person you have become. That was the intended purpose for Jesus making the atonement for your sin. You then can start to seek his will for your life. You will never be the same. But you shouldn't just stop there.
